It's only that one story that's sad. The rest of it is just kind of perfectly melancholy, although there are no heaving bosoms, so perhaps it still wouldn't meet the criteria you use to choose your vacation reading.

For the record, I have no objection to reading Austen, I just have so many OTHER things to read right now. I think Dahl must have proposed Catcher at a time when I was in between books, or perhaps just reading more.

OK. A couple of things:

1) I had to read Catcher in the Rye in Grade 11 and hated every minute of it. While some of that can be blamed on the fact that it was assigned reading, I still think I would have hated it, and am unlikely to re-read it again now to see if that's the case.

2) Why on EARTH would you bring vacation reading that leaves you 'breathless with shock and sadness'? Vacation reading should feature heaving bosoms or magazines with far more pictures than words.

3) Who is Dahl, and why can he (she?) make you read Salinger when I can't make you read Austen?

Perhaps it is a guy thing. The rest of his writing tends to feature more female characters, which might contribute to why I like it more. If you do decide you'd like to give him another try, I'd suggest you start with "Nine Stories" (or "Franny & Zooey" if you prefer novels to short stories).

I didn't like or get Catcher in the Rye either. I figured it was a guy thing. I never went back and tried any other Salinger. Perhaps now I will.
